Audi TT Offroad Concept

Audi TT Offroad Concept

Audi presents a new sporty crossover, applying the TT brand to a compact SUV.

After the 3 door Allroad Shooting Brake presented in january 2014, Audi presents with the Audi TT offroad concept what a future model of the TT range could look like ». One can therefore conclude that the TT sub-brand is compatible with SUV applications, or that Audi is keener to give to what essentially is an A3 Sportback Allroad a more niche positioning with the denomination and design language of the iconic coupé.

This concept is presented with an e-tron system (Audi speak for rechargeable hybrid) developing a peak power of 408 hp and a maximum torque of 650 Nm. The showcar accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5,2 seconds and top speed is regulated at 250 km/h. Normalized gas consumption is 1,9 L/100km – or 45 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The Audi TT offroad concept has an electric range of 50 km (31 mi), total range is 800 km (497 mi).

The hybrid electric powertrain is nearly idential to the Allroad Shooting Brake, starting with 2.0 TFSI 4 cylinder engine with 292 hp of power 380 Nm of torque. The internal combustion engine is mated through a clutch to an electric motor putting out 40 kW (54  hp) and 220 Nm of torque. Shaped as a thin disk, it is integrated in the 6 ratio e-S tronic gearbox sending torque to the front wheels. A second electric motor, independant from the first one, is located over the rear axle and puts out 85 kW (115ch) and 270 Nm.

A liquid cooled lithium-ion battery is located ahead of the rear axle, thereby contributing to a 54/46% balance and lowering the center of gravity. It stores up to 12 kWh of charge (versus 8.8 in the Allroad Concept), enabling an electric range of 50 km and/or a maximum speed of 130 km/h (80mph) in electric mode.

The showcar can either be recharged through a plug connection or by induction, thanks to Audi wireless charging technology. This wireless charging scheme is made possible by a plate, equiped with a coil and AC/AC converter, embedded in the parking spot of the Audi TT offroad concept and connected to the electrical grid. When the car is parked on the plate, the charging cycle starts automatically. The magnetic field can induce up to 3.3kW of power in the secondary coil mounted in the floor of the car. The alternative current is then converted to direct current (DC) and feeds the onboard systems. The magnetic field is not hasardous to humans or animals, and it can only be enabled when the car is present.

The TT Offroad Concept  is 4,39 meters long for 1,85 meters in width and a wheelbase of 2,63 mètres (extremely similar to the 2636mm of an A3 Sportback wagon). These dimensions are similar to the Q3 compact SUV (4385 x 1831 and 2603mm in wheelbase). Height however goes down by 8cm (1,53m vs 1608 mm). Twenty-one inch rims are mounted with 255/40 tires. Interior design is closely derived from the 3rd generation TT coupe, with a 12.3″ LCD cluster as a main interface.

The concept showcases three Audi Smart Displays. These media tablets are used a mobile infotainment systems and can be used in or out of the car. The Audi Smart Display are versatile: they can display DVD and streaming TV content, control the radio and satellite navigation. A click on the « more » button of the menu enables Internet access, with data transmission through the Audi connect LTE system. The user has access to all functions of the Android operating system, including the Google Chrome browser and the Google Play Store. The headrests of the individual seats are each equiped with a pair of loudspeakers from the advanced Bang & Olufsen sound system. They ensure optimal surround sound, and convey messages and phone conversations as well.
