VW Golf R 400

Volkswagen R Gmbh presents a Radical version of the Golf R with 400 horsepower !

Audi had set the tone at the 2014 Geneva Autoshow with its TT Quattro Sport Concept powered by a 4 cylinder 2.0L TFSI engine tuned to 420 hp and 450 Nm of torque. The engineers of the R performance division from Volkswagen were a bit more conservative and settled for a peak power of 400 hp and a maximum torque of 450 Nm available between 2400 and 6000 rpm. Specific power is at an astounding 200 per liter of displacement. The twin-clutch 6 ratio DSG gearbox sends torque to all 4 wheels through the 4Motion system. Claimed performance is a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.9 seconds and a 280 km/h top speed.

Exterior design is revisited with flared fenders, a nod to the Golf G60 rally car. Front and rear fascia adopt specific designs with carbon fiber inserts. Interior makes generous use of alcantara and the bucket seats are dressed in “carbon leather” upholstery.

There is no information about the intent of the Volkswagen Group brands to commercialize such highly tuned power trains, but the odds are that repeated presentation of spicy concepts is not innocent. Has the bar for hot hatches just been raised to 400hp ?
