Mercedes A45 AMG
Mercedes pursues an agressive product strategy to regain the leadership of the worldwide luxury market, broadening its range with models aimed at fending off BMW and Audi’s attacks.
After the CLA coupe sedan and the new E63 AMG, both available with all-wheel-drive transmission, here is the sporty version of the new A-class.
AMG did not use half measures in tuning the 4 cylinder unit for this version: the turbocharged 1991 cm3 unit reaches an impressive 360 hp at 6000 rpm, with a peak torque of 450 Nm available from 2250 to 5000 rpm, and a rev limited set at 6700 t/min. Specific power output reaches no less than 181 hp per liter. Top speed is limited at 250 km/h and the 0-100 km/h sprint claimed at 4.6s. Fuel consumption in the normalized driving cycle is only 6.9 L/100km.
Transmission comes in the way of a 7 gear twin clutch AMG Speedshift DCT system which sends torque to the 4 wheels through a 4Matic system. This all-wheel-drive transmission is built around a multidisc electrohydraulic central differential which can send up to 50% of torque to the rear wheels depending on driving dynamics, but operates in front wheel drive mode in normal conditions to improve gas mileage. Standard tire equipment is 235/40R18, with 19″ wheels offered as an option. Brake discs are 350 x 32 mm front and 330 x 22 mm at the rear.
A three level ESP system is offered, allowing to tune the dynamics of the A45 AMG to the driving conditions and mood of the moment. ESP SPORT Handling mode applies appropriate control strategies for later ESP intervention and increased drive torque at the rear axle. ESP OFF deactivates the system, but all safety functions are restored as soon as the driver actuates the brake pedal. In addition, the ESP Curve Dynamic Assist applies selective braking on the inside wheel to help turn in.
The Edition 1 launch version of the A45 AMG will offer a special equipment package, with a cirrus white paint job and matte graphite grey AMG sport stripes, red accents on the grille, mirrors and diffuser. Red brake calipers and 235/35 R 19 are also part of the package.
