Detroit 2013: Concept VW CrossBlue
New concept from VW for a 7 seats diesel hybrid SUV
Mainly designed for US and Canadian markets this 5m long SUV is a good indication of the future in VW eyes. A 190 ps turbodiesel engine together with a 40kW (54 ps) electric engine drive the front wheels. A second 85 kW (115 ps) electric engine drives the rear wheels. The total power is 306 ps with a torque of 700 Nm. The Li-Ion battery has a capacity of 9.8 kWh and can be charged on a normal domestic plug or by the diesel engine when driving.
Based on the standard VW group MQB platform this big car achieves nonetheless decent performance thanks to the huge torque. The 0-60 is done in 7.2 sec. and the maximum speeds is 127 mph. The gearbox is a dual clutch 6 speeds. The fuel efficiency for this SUV is outstanding, 89 MPGe (EPA standard fuel economy equivalent for hybrid vehicles in the USA with full utilization of battery charge; combined Highway and City cycles). The car can also work in full electric mode up to 75 mph and for a distance of 14 miles.
With this concept VW shows the way for the future, a diesel-hybrid seems to be the right things to do if the promised fuel efficiency is achieved.
