Mercedes Classe S Coupé (W217)

Mercedes unveils the new S-Class Coupé.

This is 2014 Geneva Autoshow pre-season in full bloom, and Mercedes is choosing this venue to present a pillar of its high end portfolio: the new S-Class Coupé. Formerly known as CL, the new S-Class Coupé is labelled by Mercedes “As exclusive as it gets – the ultimate in aesthetic sportiness”. Styling draws from themes seen in other recent niche models such as the CLS and CLA, including the diamond grille. The rear strays away from the model range with thin headlights. At the front, the headlamp clusters can be optionally decorated with 47 Swarowsky crystals. Dimensions are 5027 mm in length on a 2945 mm wheelbase, with a width of 1899 mm and a height of 1411mm.

The new S-Class Coupé showcases all the latest technologies developped by Mercedes, with a sharp focus on safety and comfort. The “Intelligent Drive” systems include, among other things the PRE-SAFE® brake with pedestrian detection, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, BAS PLUS with junction assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive High-beam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS features an additional function apart from the adaptive brake assistant, which provides collision protection from 7 km/h up to 105 km/h. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 50 km/h, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at up to 40 km/h. The Magic Body Control introduced on the S-Class Sedan features on the Coupe a curve tilting feature which inclines automatically and continuously in fractions of a second and to angles of up to 2.5 degrees in curves, just like a motorcycle would.

At commercial launch, the only engine available will be the 4663 cm3 V8 putting out 455 hp and 700 Nm of torque. The brand’s websites indicate that the 4Matic all-wheel-drive transmission is a standard feature. Inside, a new head-up display option allows to project the speed, speed limit and satellite navigation directions in front of the driver, as well as security warnings.
