Ford officially unveils the sixth generation Mustang.
Since 1964, the Mustang is a flagship in the Ford model range, synomous with affordable enthusiast coupes and convertibles. Today, a few month before the 50th anniversary of the pony car introduction, Ford presents this all new model simultaneously in six cities worldwide, a sign that Ford intends to market the iconic model worldwide.
Styling has been modernized with a wider and lower stance, but preserves the DNA of the Mustang, with the fastback rear, triple-band light clusters and sequential turn indicators. At the front, the shark nose facia and trapezoidal grille are unmistakenly Mustang. The Convertible version will have a better insulated soft top and a twice faster mechanism.
Three power plants will be offered initially: a 5.0 liter V8 (420hp and 529 Nm of torque), of course, and the entry level 3.7L V6 (300hp, 366 Nm), but a 2.3L turbocharged inline 4 Ecoboost engine will also be offered with a useful 305 hp and no lesse than 407 Nm of torque. The manual gearbox has been improved, and the torque converter automatic will be available with steering wheel mounted paddles.
The most fundamental change comes from the chassis department. The new Mustang replaces its antiquated live axle with a modern, multilink independent rear suspension with aluminimum parts to reduce unsprung weight. At the front, new McPherson struts enable the use of larger brake systems, three different options will be offered.
More than 9 million Mustang have been sold in 50 years of production. The peak was reached in 1966 with an astounding 549’436 Pony cars sold.
