MP4 est le nom donné tous les châssis McLaren et signifie McLaren Project four...Project four étant le nom de l'ancienne écurie de Ron Dennis avant qu'il ne fusionne avec McLaren au début des années 80

Le nom de la nouvelle McLaren sport est MP4-12C. Qu’est-ce que cela signifie ? Comme on est en droit de s’attendre, chez McLaren, rien n’est laissé au hasard et les désignations n’échappent pas à la règle.

- « MP4 » est restée la désignation du châssis pour toutes les voitures de formule 1 McLaren depuis 1981. Elle signifie McLaren Project 4, le résultat de la fusion de l’organisation Project 4 de Ron Dennis avec McLaren.

- Le « 12 » fait référence à l’indice de performance interne de la McLaren qui évalue la performance des concurrents et de ses propres véhicules à la fois. Le critère englobe la puissance, le poids, les émissions et l’efficacité aérodynamique. La combinaison de tous ces facteurs fournit un indice de performance globale utilisé comme indice de référence pour tous les développements de la voiture.

- Le « C » signifie carbone, soulignant l’application unique de la technologie de la fibre de carbone dans la future gamme des voitures de sport de McLaren.

World debut of MP4-12C sees McLaren take pole position in Goodwood Festival of Speed Supercar Run

The innovative new McLaren MP4-12C was given its public world debut at the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed, held from 01-04 July. Current Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button and 2008 Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton delighted the crowds by driving a McLaren Orange Validation Prototype (VP) 12C up the famous Goodwood Hill on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

With McLaren Automotive Managing Director, Antony Sheriff at the wheel, the MP4-12C was the first car to be driven up Goodwood Hill on Friday 02 July, effectively opening the show. The 12C was subsequently granted pole position in every Supercar Run over the course of the weekend, a fitting gesture to two Formula 1 World Champions that are accustomed to leading from the front!

In addition to another 12C VP car, finished in Volcano Orange and fitted with stunning Lightweight Forged alloy wheels, many of the 176,000 visitors to Goodwood Festival of Speed over the course of the event were drawn to a 12C rolling chassis displayed on the McLaren stand. Presenting a car in this way underlines the skill and pride the team place in the 12C’s engineering integrity. By viewing firsthand the car’s hydraulic suspension arrangement, its carbon Monocell chassis, compact 3.8-litre twin-turbo engine and unique transmission unit, visitors with an appreciation for innovation and technology had a rare glimpse of what lies under the skin of the 12C.

McLaren Automotive Managing Director Antony Sheriff said: “The visitors to our stand were the perfect blend of car enthusiasts and potential customers; I’m delighted that we chose Goodwood Festival of Speed to unveil the 12C to the public. Two British Formula 1 World Champions were behind the wheel of the car as we led the field up the hill. A major landmark, delivered to McLaren’s high standards.

“Visitors to the McLaren stand either displayed an in-depth understanding of the bespoke technologies developed for the 12C, or spent time discussing our plans. It was a great opportunity for tens of thousands of car fans to see the car in the metal…and carbon.

“This is just the start for McLaren Automotive. In five year’s time, I expect us to be presenting a full range of innovative and performance-focused sports cars. Sports car enthusiasts all over the world will be able to enjoy McLaren cars up close and personal at events like Goodwood Festival of Speed.”

WOKING, UK (July 6, 2010) – The £40 million McLaren Production Centre (MPC) construction programme continues to proceed ahead of schedule at the McLaren Group’s headquarters in Woking, England after four months of the 12 month project.

Since the May 4th MPC announcement, the key phases on-site have involved major concrete piling and structural works that have formed the basement slab, structural columns and the initial pouring of the wall structures, plus the introduction of three large tower cranes, and major earth movements for landscaping and re-contouring. Over 200 people are now employed on-site.

Alan Foster, Operations Director at McLaren Automotive said: “The MPC programme is progressing as successfully as our other projects at McLaren. We set the same challenges for the MPC as for developing our 12C sports car, or trying to win Grands Prix. We ask ourselves, ‘how can we do this better, faster, or in an innovative or new way that challenges the traditional?’

“The great weather we have had this spring, plus the attention to detail we embedded in the project from day one with our architects, surveyors, and contractors, is paying dividends as the project continues to proceed ahead of schedule.”

Je me faisais justement la réflexion. Y'a bien les cats en amont, mais là j'ai du mal à comprendre comment ils arrivent à passer les normes avec un truc si petit. Si quelqu'un a la réponse technique...

Il y a les turbos qui étouffent le bruit, mais probablement pas à ce point. Et pourtant de l'extérieur, sur les vidéos, ça n'a pas l'air d'être extravaguant.
