Porsche 991.2 Carrera: turbocharged

The Porsche 911 Carrera crosses the turbocharing rubicon.

The mid-cycle facelift of the 991 series Porsche 911 Carrera takes a particular significance. The iconic GT abandons naturally aspirated engines for forced induction. The engine remains a flat six, but displacement is reduced to 3.0 litres, and each cylinder bank receives its turbocharger and intercooler. With 91.0 mm in bore and 76.4 mm in stroke, the engine is specified at 2981 cm3. This arrangement is specific to this engine: the 2.7L boxer that powers the entry level Boxster has a 89.0mm x 72.5 mm design, while the 3.4L unit common to the Boxster S and Carrera has a 97.0 x 77.5 mm in bore and stroke.

Peak torque jumps by 60 Nm at radically lower revs, 1700 rpm instead of 5600 on the outgoing block. Power climbs by 20 hp, achieved at 6500 rpm, with max revs specified at 7500 rpm. Gas consumption in the NEDC normalized cycle drops by 0.8 L/100km on the Carrera and 1.0 L/100km on the Carrera S. CO2 emissions are also reduced: the 991.2 Carrera PDK emits only 169 g/km. Esthetically, the front facia benefits from subtle changes. At the rear, changes are more obvious with a vertical grille and heat extraction openings behind the rear wheels. The sports exhaust system adopts to outlets brought inward to the axis of the car, while twin outlets are proposed as an option for the standard exhaust system. In the chassis department, the rear wheels gain 0.5 in at 11.5 inches in width. The Carrera S now wears 305mm rubber instead of 295 mm on the 991.1. The Carrera S can also now be equipped as an option (€ 2249) with the rear wheel steering system which already equips the 911 Turbo and GT3.
