Li, who “always wanted a sports car company”, has asked Horbury to find a design direction for the company. Sales have lately improved under dynamic CEO Jean-Marc Gales, and losses havedeclined, but everyone agrees that what the Hethel firm most needs is investment. To justify that, Lotus needs a convincing model plan and it’s not yet clear what Li and his top managers make of Gales’s existing one. The CEO wants to produce two new sports car models (one evidently an Elise replacement) plus an SUV.

Horbury acknowledges that Geely has “big ambitions” for Lotus. Although he now has overall charge of design, he is at pains to stress that “this doesn’t make me a design dictator”. Hethel’s long-serving head of design, Russell Carr, started as an intern working for Horbury back at MGA and the two men profess a mutual respect. “I see my job as being to set the goals and steer the ship,” says Horbury. “The Lotus guys already do great work, but now they’ll have the resources of Geely Design UK to assist in any way they need.”

URGENT ACTION NEEDED – With exciting new programmes to be formally announced soon, Lotus senior management and engineers want to meet potential new, innovative suppliers from amongst the MIA membership.

The 70th Anniversary year of Lotus promises to be THE most exciting time in its history. In September 2017, Geely Holding Group acquired a majority stake in Group Lotus plc, which now plans, through brand building and a diversified product offering, to leverage Geely Group synergies to compete with Porsche - placing the Lotus brand in its strongest ever position. Last year, Lotus sold 1,600 cars globally, up 13% on the year before.

Lotus has a 100-acre facility in Hethel, Norfolk, with its own 2.2 mile private test track, utilising in-house research, design and engineering which has produced over 100,000 Lotus Cars. To help develop the two sports cars and the SUV, Lotus will hire 300 new people this year. The expansion would boost Lotus to 1,100 employees. Lotus is now producing its best ever cars and is the UK’s leading sports luxury brand, with an increasing worldwide network of 215 sales outlets set to increase to 235 this year.

Jean-Marc has stabilised and turned Lotus to profitability for the first time in the iconic brands history with new industry leading products and unique business models since joining the company in 2014. Lotus is poised for the next phase of growth under Feng Qingfeng’s leadership, where its expertise in lightweight materials and sport cars-engineering will form part of the wider expansion of Geely ‘s automotive portfolio. At the same time I will welcome Jean-Marc‘s Council as Chief Strategic Advisor to myself and the Board of Directors.

Meanwhile, Geely bosses have told Autocar: “Lotus used to be ranked alongside Ferrari and Porsche. We need to come back to that rank again.”

Popham will serve as senior vice-president of commercial operations for Group Lotus and CEO of Lotus Sports Cars. He will report to Group Lotus chief executive Feng Qingfeng, a long-time executive of Geely, which now owns the Norfolk sports car maker.

Legendary Norfolk carmaker Lotus has today unveiled plans for a new multi-million pound expansion which aims to transform its Hethel site into a global destination for fans.
