F1’s McLaren revs up hunt for investors (Financial Times)

McLaren boss Ron Dennis has instructed Morgan Stanley to search for new investors as he plots to revive the Formula One team’s ailing fortunes and expand its technology division. Mr Dennis, 66, re-established control of the Surrey group last month, usurping team principal and chief executive Martin Whitmarsh. Mr Dennis is a 25 per cent shareholder in McLaren.

The team has held exploratory talks with Chinese investors. “The net is cast wide,” he said, when asked about the discussions. “It’s a question of the quality of the investor.” He is restructuring the technology division to speed up expansion. Overall group revenues, including the high-performance sports car business, are running at $900m and Mr Dennis wants that to be roughly $2bn in five years’ time.

He plans to increase the footprint of McLaren headquarters by 50 per cent and to take staff numbers from 2,200 to 3,000. McLaren’s other shareholders are Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company with 50 per cent, and entrepreneur Mansour Ojjeh’s Tag Group. In his first public comments since his return to the helm, Mr Dennis said the F1 team’s mediocre results were “unacceptable” and were affecting the group’s profile. “You’re in a situation where if you’re not winning, it’s not doing it’s job.”

Le CFO prédit un saut en profitabilité dû à l'importance de la P1 dans le mix des ventes. Profits quadruplés et revenus doublés par rapport à 2013 mais volumes plats à 1500 voitures.
Il est difficile de comprendre comment ils vont atteindre l'objectif de 4500 voitures d'ici "deux ou trois ans".

Mon avis, qui n'engage que moi, ils ne les ferront jamais, la "P13" semble déjà "overpricé", £120.000 et la 650S est à mon goût un ratage stylistique même si encore plus performante mais à ces niveaux de chronos tout cela reste bien subjectif. A 120.000€ la P13, pourquoi pas, à 150.000€, ce n'est même pas la peine d'y penser.

Quelques nouvelles sur le business de McLaren:
- profit opérationnel de quelques millions de livres en 2013 (hors investissements, donc)
- environ 1400 12C vendues en 2013, plus les P1 livrées sur la fin de l'année
- l'objectif est d'atteindre 3500 à 4000 voitures en 2016
- pour y parvenir, la marque lancera (en 2015) un produit d'appel à £120'000 (€146'000) positionnée sous la 650S (£195'250). La marge sur cette P13 sera moindre que sur la 650S mais devrait aider à faire baisser les coûts (pas les prix !) de la 650S par effet de volume
- un autre modèle viendra s'insérer en 2016 entre 650S et P1
- aucun SUV ni 2+2 à l'horizon
- 20 concessions supplémentaires en 2014 pour atteindre 70, et 100 en 2016
- en comparaison avec les marges opérationnelles de 18% chez Porsche ou 15.6% chez Ferrari, McLaren dit qu'atteindre 10% "serait un rêve absolu"

McLaren Automotive has also confirmed that its next all-new sportscar, codenamed P13, will be available before the end of 2015 and will take its range into a lower price-point - making McLaren more accessible, while retaining its commitment to excellence, performance and innovation. P13 will be a comfortable, usable, and beautiful mid-engined two seater sportscar, built around a carbon fibre chassis. It will be available in more than one derivative and once fully on sale, McLaren Automotive’s total annual production will increase to around 4,000 units per year.

At the other end of its range, McLaren Automotive has also confirmed that it will produce a limited run of track-only editions of its award winning McLaren P1™ hypercar. Available only to clients who have ordered one of the 375 road legal versions, the car will be the company’s most powerful car yet. It will also be its rarest.

Plus de 100 P1 sont entre les mains de clients, 36 livrées en 2013 et le reste depuis le début 2014.

Les volumes 2014 seront en ligne avec 2013, mais les revenus en hausse du fait du mix favorable P1/650S.

Dans cet article, très détaillé, le plan produit de Mclaren décrit. Chaque modèle aura maintenant trois déclinaisons : coupé, spider et GTS (version club circuit).

- 2015 :

==> P13 coupé : officiellement nommée 500S. Mclaren reprend le V8 3.8l de la 650S dégonflé à 500cv. Voiture montée avec un châssis carbone revu aux seuils de portes abaissés, espace de stockage supérieur derrière les sièges, nouvel écran tactile plus grand et un intérieur entièrement revu, plus ergonomique avec la possibilité optionnel de l'affichage tête haute. Cet intérieur servira de base à tous les futurs modèles de la gamme. Prix annoncé , 2/3 de celui de la 12C. Ce qui positionnerait le modèle à 140k€.

==> 650S GTS : La version hard core de la 650. Voiture allégée et optimisée pour la piste.


- 2016 :

==> P13 Spider et P1 GTR, surement fin 2015 pour cette dernière, à voir. La P1 GTR étant à la P1 ce que la FXX est à l'Enzo. Une voiture de circuit. Vendue uniquement aux clients de P1.


- 2017 :

==> P16 Coupé : La remplaçante de la 650S, si elle sera guère moins rapide en ligne droite, elle le sera en courbe et accélération. Elle introduira de nouvelles technologies comme la vectorisation de couple (Technologie surement développée en commun avec Honda). Elle intégrera aussi un mécanisme anti-plongée et anti-cabrage. Diminution forte des émissions CO2, on parle de récupération d'énergie et système hybride si la technologie le permet sans greffer le poids de la voiture.

==> P13 GTS

- 2018 :

==> P16 Spider : Surprenant, Mclaren ne sort pas le modèle en parallèle du coupé mais décale sa présentation d'une année.

- 2019 :

==> P13 Facelift et P16 GTS.

==> P15 : La quasi-supercar de Mclaren, une première ébauche sera finalisée pour cette fin d'année. En fonction de la technologie des batteries dans cinq ans, Mclaren pourrait opter pour un véhicule hybride en l'équipant d'une V6 2.9L associé à des moteurs électriques. Prix annoncé : 400.000€ (surement H.T). Mclaren dispose aussi d'un plan B consistant à sortir cette P15 en 2017 et repousser celle de la P16. Rien n'est acté, tout dépendra des choix technologiques.

- 2020 :

==> Coupé 2+2 : Tout comme Ferrari, Mclaren construit une gamme complète. Surement une concurrente à la future remplaçante de la FF.
